According to statistics, there are more than a million Brazilian women who have undergone a plastic surgery operation, which represents more than 40% of all operations carried out by surgeons around the world. Breast reconstruction accounts for about 10% of all plastic surgeries performed each year in the United States; however, the number has increased since 2004 by over 95%.

Over time, the number of breast reconstruction procedures has increased significantly, especially within five years after the mastectomy. On average, American surgeons perform about 70 reconstructions annually per 100,000 women. The number increases significantly with age: the highest rate is among women between 50 and 69 years old, reaching an average of 135 reconstructions per 100,000 women. Besides reconstructions, plastic surgeons in the United States also perform many breast augmentations every year: more than 300 thousand cases. To increase their breasts, women usually take fat from other parts of the body, such as the abdomen or buttocks and then use it in the mammary glands. In this case, tissue expansion is used to expand skin and allow placement of an implant. Implants can be placed either under or over the muscles of the chest wall depending on each patient’s characteristics and preferences.
